Volume is a measure of three-dimensional extent. The SI unit is the cubic metre (m³); practical units include litres, millilitres, and (in the US) cubic inches, cubic feet and gallons.

Volume conversions are "cubed" — a factor of 10 in length is a factor of 1000 in volume. This matters when converting a container's dimensions to litres, or when comparing a US gallon (3.785 L) to an imperial gallon (4.546 L).

Common applications

Converting a tank's dimensions to litres; comparing US and imperial gallons; reading a part's volume in cm³ vs. in³.
