L Henries = flux linkage per ampere

Inductance is a component's ability to store energy in a magnetic field, measured in henries (H). An inductor opposes changes in current, and its value determines its reactance at a given frequency (X_L = 2πfL).

Practical inductors are in the µH to mH range (nH for RF). Converting between H, mH, µH and nH matters when reading inductor color codes, designing LC filters, or comparing a power inductor (mH) to an RF choke (µH).

Common applications

Reading an inductor's color code; sizing a choke in µH; specifying a power inductor in mH; comparing RF components in nH.

Frequently asked questions

Inductance is the ability to store energy in a magnetic field, measured in henries (H). It opposes changes in current.

1 mH = 1000 µH. Multiply by 1000.

At RF frequencies, even small inductances have significant reactance, so nH values are common in filters and matching networks.
