C Farads = charge per volt

Capacitance is a component's ability to store energy in an electric field, measured in farads (F). A capacitor's value tells you how much charge it holds per volt (Q = C·V). Real capacitors are rarely measured in farads — they're in the µF, nF and pF range.

Converting between F, mF, µF, nF and pF is essential when reading capacitor codes (e.g. "103" = 10 nF), designing RC filters, or comparing a 100 µF electrolytic to a 100 pF ceramic. A single misplaced prefix changes the time constant by a factor of a million.

Common applications

Reading a capacitor's 3-digit code; sizing a decoupling cap in µF; selecting a coupling cap in nF; comparing film and ceramic values in pF.

Frequently asked questions

Capacitance is the ability to store energy in an electric field, measured in farads (F). C = Q/V.

It's 10 × 10³ pF = 10,000 pF = 10 nF. The first two digits are the mantissa, the third is the power of ten (in pF).

1 µF = 1000 nF. Multiply by 1000.
